Hymn Lyrics

THE LYRICS ~ “All things bright and beautiful”

All things bright and beautiful,
all creatures great and small,
all things wise and wonderful,
the Lord God made them all.

Each little flow’r that opens,
each little bird that sings,
he made their glowing colors,
he made their tiny wings. [Refrain]

The purple-headed mountain,
the river running by,
the sunset, and the morning
that brightens up the sky. [Refrain]

The cold wind in the winter,
the pleasant summer sun,
the ripe fruits in the garden,
he made them, ev’ry one. [Refrain]

The tall trees in the greenwood,
the meadows where we play,
the flowers by the water
we gather ev’ry day. [Refrain]

He gave us eyes to see them,
and lips that we might tell
how great is God Almighty,
who has made all things well. [Refrain]

The Author of the Hymn

THE AUTHORS ~ Cecil France Alexander

Born April, 1818 in Dublin, Ireland

Died October 12, 1895 in Londonderry, UK

She was an Anglo-Irish hymnwriter and poet. She began writing verse in her childhood.
Her subsequent religious work was strongly influenced by her contacts with the Oxford Movement, and in particular with John Keble, who edited Hymns for Little Children, one of her anthologies.
By the 1840s she was already known as a hymn writer and her compositions were soon included in Church of Ireland hymnbooks.

Alexander died at the Bishop’s Palace in Derry and was buried in Derry City Cemetery. Her husband is buried beside her in a grave which was restored by the Friends of St Columba’s Cathedral in 2006. An Ulster History Circle commemorative blue plaque was unveiled in her memory on 14 April 1995 at Bishop Street in the city.

History of Hymn

THE HISTORY ~ “All things bright and Beautiful”

The hymn was first published in 1848 in Mrs Cecil Alexander’s Hymns for Little Children. It is an Anglican hymn, also sung in many other Christian denominations.

The piece can be sung to several melodies, in particular the 17th-century English melody “Royal Oak”, adapted by Martin Shaw, and “All Things Bright and Beautiful” by William Henry Monk.

The hymn consists of a series of stanzas that elaborate upon verses of the Apostles’ Creed. It may have been inspired by Psalm 104, verses 24 and 25.
