Name of God

El Elyon

“The God Most High”

Elyon is derived from the Hebrew word for “go up” or “ascend”. This form, elyon, is an adjective denoting the “highest” or the “uppermost”. Therefore the implication is “that which is highest or most high”.

When used together, El and Elyon means The Most High God. To put it another way, God is above everyone and everything.

This Name of God also denotes exaltation and emphatically speaks of God’s supremacy, His absolute right to lordship. Accordingly, El Elyon describes His position as THE sovereign, majestic, preeminent God.

God is called by this Name 52 times in the Bible, on occasion without El, simply as Elyon.

Application: El Elyon is the Sovereign God, consequently it is He in whom we can put our trust. El Elyon has supremacy over all false gods.

Scripture of El Elyon

Genesis 14:18
ESV: “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High.”

NOG: “Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of El Elyon”

Prayer to El Elyon

“El Elyon, You created all things and You are above all things. You are Sovereign; You are King. As King over all, nothing is outside of  Your control.

Too often I think I know best and do not understand what You are doing or what You are allowing.

Please forgive me, El Elyon, Most High King of the universe. My understanding is limited and often I allow fear to grow. Please help me to remember that You are the Majestic King who loves me and knows me. Amen
