Name of God
YHWH,
Yahweh, Jehovah
“LORD, Master”
Strictly speaking, this is only proper name for God. In English Bibles, it is translated “LORD” in all capital letters, to distinguish it from the Hebrew word “Adonai” which is translated “Lord” (lower case letters).
This name specifies an immediacy, a presence. That is to say, Yahweh is present. He is accessible. He is near to those who call on Him for deliverance (Psalm 107:13), for forgiveness (Psalm 25:11) and for guidance (Psalm 31:3).
Yahweh / Jehovah comes from the Hebrew verb havah meaning “to be”. In addition, this verb is similar to the Hebrew chavah meaning “to live”. Therefore, God is “The Self-Existent One”, “I AM WHO I AM” which is how He revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush, Exodus 3:14.
As the covenant Name of God, Jewish tradition considered this word too holy to pronounce or even write. Consequently it was written using only four consonants without any vowels: YHWH. The Bible books of Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, and 1 & 2 Kings use Jehovah almost exclusively when referring to God.
Occurrence: YHWH / Yahweh / Jehovah occurs 6,823 times in the Old Testament.
Application: God never changes. His promises never fail. When we are faithless, He is faithful. We need to obey Him.
Scripture for Yahweh
Exodus 13:21
NOG: “By day Yahweh went ahead of them in a column of smoke to lead them on their way. By night he went ahead of them in a column of fire to give them light so that they could travel by day or by night.”
Prayer to Yahweh
“Yahweh, You are my LORD and Master today and ever more!
I PRAISE You Yahweh, for being present with me, from beginning to eternity, never missing moments of my day or my life.
I ADORE you Jehovah, and I am proud and honored to call you my LORD and Master.
I ask Your FORGIVENESS, Jehovah, for the times I forget to ask Your Guidance in even the smallest of concerns.
I THANK YOU, Yahweh, for being ever Faithful, even when I am faithless. Amen & Amen”
