About “Our Vision”

Bible + Art
“Two great things are better together.”

  Bible + Art

Susan: ”I have always believed in the Bible, lived by the Bible, read the Bible. But by the year 2015, I had a hard time digging into the scriptures just for the fun of it.  I had to find something to  use my creativity that would pique my interest in the scriptures again.

Jackie: “I have always loved creating art, all kinds of arts, with all kinds of medium. But, by the year 2015, my multi-media art supplies had taken over several craft rooms.  I had to find something to focus my artistic endeavors and find purpose in what I love to do.”

And just like the chocolate bar got in the peanut butter…

Susan and Jackie: “You got your Art in my Bible!” and then, “You got your Bible in my Art!”.  They both agreed… “Two great things are better together.” And the outcome was and still is Creative-Bible-Journaling, which they both love and want to share with you!

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a (NIV) “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

Do you know someone who wants to be creative in their bible, but doesn’t feel “good enough” or creative enough to put pen to bible paper, or she does the art, but then won’t share it with others…

WELL, as most of us here are moms / grandmas, I think we can all relate to this: Your little Kindergarten child rushes in the door with their new artwork from the school day. “Mommy, Mommy, look what I made” they squeal joyously. You lavish them with praise, “Horray, that looks wonderful, you did such a great job on that art, let’s put it up on the refrigerator door. Your child can hardly wait to get the magnets on the four corners of the paper, so everyone can see their great work…

You never question their abilities or their intentions and are never embarrassed by their scribbles. You proudly share their newest creations with whoever comes through your door. You keep it up until the edges are crinkled and there is new art to put up. Even after you take it off your fridge, you wouldn’t think of throwing it away. After all, you feel the need to save it and relive these wonderful masterpieces showing your child’s progress and growth. RIGHT? Am I close to spot on?

Well, guess what?
ALL YOUR ART IS ALWAYS GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOD’S FRIDGE! NO MATTER WHAT!

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

CBJ Mission Statement

James 4:7a says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” And what better way to “draw’ than to… “draw”!

The CBJ DIFFERENCE is making a difference in the lives of those who want to connect with God’s Word through the art of Bible Journaling.

Whether a beginner or experienced, in the bible or in the arts, each CBJ member can learn and use the unique techniques, the step-by-step lessons and the printables that are offered throughout the CBJ community.

Fur Baby: a Russian Blue Mix grey cat, named Bella. She is my son’s Emotional Support Pet and the center of our family.

🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: I was an over-active-stay-at-home-mom for 25 years, including a few years of homeschooling, and all the years being the chief referee/coach, tutor/counselor, advocate/life coach for all three of our children. For the last 6 years I have worked at our local ABC/FOX News station, producing the evening newscasts. Lights, Camera, Action!

🔹  🔷   🔹

Career Goals: My passion is running the CBJ Community and sharing my love for Bible Journaling and the Lord. I feel it’s God’s path for the CBJ Ministries for me and my sister, co-founder, Jackie Mattingly to go full time CBJ, renting a Studio, half for Video Production and the other for on-location classes, all the while broadening the CBJ on-line ministry. This updated website has been a big endeavor to expand the mission.

🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: In May of 2015, I was looking for a creative way to fall in love with God’s Word again. All I could find on google was drawing in bibles. That was not what I was looking for, or so I thought. The Lord knew what He was doing, leading me in that direction. I started with a 1.5” margined journaling bible and immediately fell back in love with the Word again.

CBJ: I started a bible journaling group at my church, and that went so well, I wanted to share this new “hobby turned worship” with the world, literally. My passion is to be a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE to those around me, and so in July 2015, my sister and I, started the CBJ Website and Youtube channel. It took us a year to realize that we needed a Facebook page to bring traffic to our content. So, in July 2016, I started this Facebook Group, with adding volunteer staff and activities in January 2017. We have been sharing Bible Journaling with THE CBJ DIFFERENCE ever since!

Family: I will be 42 years young on March 20th. My husband Fred, and I, have been married almost 6 years. We blended our families and are incredibly blessed. His amazing daughter, Elysia was 9 years old, and my son, Chris was 16. I love homeschooling Elysia, who is now 15. Chris is now 22, and has a wonderful girlfriend, Austyn, and a beautiful 1 year old son, Christopher Ryan. I am blessed with this wonderful family. They are all my backbone.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: homeschooling mommy for 5 years and a proud wife!

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I started getting supplies about 5 years ago. I kept buying and buying, just not “doing” anything with any of it. I love pens, pencils, stickers, and planners. I love coloring and drawing. I knew what I wanted to do, but just didn’t know where to start or how to begin. But I love trying new things and learning and growing. I love meeting new people, and making new friends. So I started looking on line for a group of friends to show me how to use all my bible journaling supplies that I had stashed away. In comes CBJ into my life…

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ:  Shortly after I joined CBJ, I became the Kidz Club leader, but because I didn’t really know much about bible journaling yet, or being a leader in a facebook group, it just didn’t work out for me back then. But I have been growing a lot and taking care of my health, and well being. When I was ready to come back to bible journaling, Susan and the other staff welcomed me back with open arms. She has been an amazing person, friend, and leader. My new goal is being consistent with the Artsy Devotions and Scripture Writing. I would love to learn hand-lettering this year as well. I am blessed with this CBJ family. I plan on learning and growing more. I have had a hard life, that has taught me a lot. And I live and grow from that. God has always been by my side, and now I am by His side. This group is a huge blessing in my life.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

FAMILY: Recently widowed and trying to figure out my new life.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CAREER: I have always been an artist of one type or another, whether it was a graphic designer, photographer or as a pyrotechnician. I consider fireworks as performance art, that you have no way to practice in advance other than in your head, and you only have one opportunity to get it right. I shoot professional fireworks shows in Alaska for the 4th of July, New Years Eve and other events. My late husband and I traveled often, participating in Fireworks Celebrations here and in other countries. We enjoyed being creative in the night sky together.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

BIBLE JOURNALING: I started Bible Journaling when my sister, Susan Stump, and I started the Creative-Bible-Journaling.com website. I particularly like doing video tutorials of various simple techniques, encouraging individuals who may not be confident in their artistic abilities, to go beyond simply coloring in illustrated Bibles. I used to be the best “tracer” around, even though I couldn’t actually “draw” anything on my own. But beginning with Debbie Dodd’s CBJ Drawing Room tutorials, I began drawing simple things for bible journaling, and as time went on, I have really enjoyed the freedom of drawing freehand.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ: I work with Susan Stump on all things CBJ. You will see my artwork around the site, but specifically in the Clip Art Elements Activity and the new Digital Clip Art Gallery. You can also see my webposts at the CBJ blog, demonstrating various art techniques, product reviews and speciality projects. I mostly look forward to seeing how you use the various resources as inspiration for your personally bible journaling experience.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I started journaling about 2 years ago, using coloring books, then discovered KJV My Creative Bible. Lately, I have been wanting to learn how to draw better so i have gone online to do some courses on drawing which i am still learning alot.

Family: My husband Scott and I have been married for 19 years. We have one 12 year old daughter.

🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: Homeschool Mom, Blogger and Artist.

🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I started Bible journaling off and on after I realized I needed a way to heal my broken spirit from a car accident that happened 11 years prior, the other challenge I faced was figuring out how to draw again. Easier said then done since the accident left my dominant hand damaged and fingers had to be reattached.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ: Through desperation and God’s leading I stumbled upon CBJ on Youtube which piqued my interest and lead me to investigate more about what it was all about. I am so blessed to have follow my curiosity, since beginning CBJ has given me the resources, instructions, encouragement and most of all prayers that I needed which this is now being passing down to my daughter.

I am now the new Kidz Club Director, as CBJ is rebuilding this worthwhile activity. I’m looking forward to sharing Scripture and Art with your children.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I started journaling about four years ago, using a cheap sketchpad from Wal-Mart. After about a month, I bought some adult coloring books, then the My Creative Bible. I now have 6 bibles I use for coloring. Lately, I have been teaching an Introduction to Bible Art Journaling class at a couple local non-profits. I am a pen and pencil addict, with several hundred of each! I love using different supplies and techniques.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ: I’m Susan’s right hand gal, I work (virtually) in the CBJ Office as the Facebook Director and help with just about everything! I have attempted every activity and lesson offered by CBJ and enjoy trying new materials and techniques.

Lettering Lodge artist, Drawing Room artist and Production Crew

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Family: Hubby Fred, two grown children, their spouses and 5 grandkids (ages 14-21)

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: I have been retired since 2010 after 30 years as a public library manager.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I came to Bible Journaling while searching for a place/reason to return to doing artwork. My desire was to delve into colored pencil work and to do drawing again. I got my Journaling Bible (NIV Journal the Word) in August 2016 and searched on Pinterest for ideas.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ: One day Facebook popped up an ad for CBJ and I joined. The Lettering Lodge was of special interest, as I like to do artistic lettering of verses with my drawings. I asked Susan if she would like to see a lettering style I designed and suddenly I was staff! Another casual ‘it would be nice to have drawing tutorials’ landed me a job in the newly formed Drawing Room.

These are still my favorite places to hang out but I also love participating in Scripture Writing, Hymnal Art and have just started Verse Mapping.

My second journaling bible is an ESV interleaved Bible. I generally use it for tip-in art, gluing in copies of my own artwork, doing work with gelatos, watercolors and watercolor pencils as well as making full-page art and lettering projects.

NZ Coordinator and Production Crew

  🔹  🔷   🔹

Family: My husband Brian and I married in 1970 and we have a son and a daughter, both married, and 2 grandchildren aged 11 and 14.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: I am a nurse and have worked in various nursing fields, but the most recent was 25 years aged care management, 15 years of which were caring for returned service persons. I retired from nursing in 2014 following an extremely stressful time culminating in the death of my father at age 92.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling Experience: I have been a scrapbooker since our 1st grandchild was expected and in mid-2017 I stumbled across Bible Journalling through Shanna Noel’s classes. After that I got really excited about it, joined several Bible Journaling Facebook groups, started practicing in a blank journal and then, after much research, I ordered an Inspire Large Print Bible. I couldn’t find one in the New Zealand shops and have a constant challenge with the huge shipping charges to get products here.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ Experience: One of the groups I joined up with was CBJ – I hadn’t been a member very long when I was asked if I would join the staff. At the time I was preparing to start a Bible Journalling class at our church, so Susan Stump suggested that I help with the Tip-ins. She generously allowed me to use any of the CBJ resources in my classes and I have made good use of the CBJ resources. I assisted in the Illustrated Bible Club for a while, and I also try to keep up with Scripture Writing.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

I am now the New Zealand Coordinator and can help any fellow Kiwi’s. I’m also on the production team, making sample projects with the Clip Art Elements and Hymnal Journaling.

Family: I am married to Kevin and we have 3 beautiful kids and 4 very grand grandsons!

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Career: I retired from Southern Illinois University about 5 years ago as Director of Gift Accounting for the SIU Foundation. I am very thankful I was able to retire after 30 years of service.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: Before I found CBJ, I really thought Bible journaling was studying and taking notes in my Bible. I had bought the KJV Journaling Bible for that purpose and loved being able to take notes in the lined margins.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ Experience: Wow! A whole new world was opened up to me with CBJ. I didn’t do much at first, except look around. Then I decided to give it all a try.

I loved it all, especially the Scripture Writing. I decided to give the lettering a try and I am hooked! I love it! I loved doing the tip-ins right from the start, because I knew I couldn’t draw stick people and the tip-ins were ready to color and put in my Bible. Now we have the elements from Jackie which are so beautiful. It is such a blessing to add these to my Bibles. When Debbie started the Drawing Room, I decided to try it. Debbie’s lessons have step-by-step instructions. I love following her instructions and learning how to do things I can add to my illustrations.

I love all the CBJ activities and I now own 6 illustrated Bibles! I also have a Bible with a 2” margin and an Interleaved Bible that I do my journaling in. I love learning! I can be found just about everywhere in CBJ, because I enjoy all the activities!

Pets: I have a dog (Snickers), cat (Miss Ruby), cat (Delilah aka BabyD).

🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I started Bible journaling after my daughter had asked me for a journaling Bible and told me what it was for. I had previously bought the My Creative Bible when I saw it at Michaels and thought it might help me get back to reading the Word. I have been struggling hard with bad depression and Bible reading had become harder and harder. My daughter had been giving me Bible journaling assignments so she could try out some things she was learning about leading devotionals and classes at Bible college. That stopped and I joined everything I could find on Facebook about Bible journaling. I knew I was not able to do what I was seeing posted on the groups so I did not do anything.

🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ: One day I was on CBJ and fell into the Prayer Chapel. I posted a prayer request for my messed up family thinking I would just leave the group if anyone judged me for that. Instead people prayed and cared. I looked at other things CBJ had and joined the Guided Tour (at that time it was a Retreat). I loved it!
I found I really liked lettering and could actually do it. I still struggle especially after a very hard 2019, but this group and the wonderful ladies here keep me going.

IVY BROG, Appleton, Wisconsin, CBJ Art Department, Video Showcase

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Bible Journaling: I’ve always journaled and taken notes in my Bible, and maybe even put small illustrations in the margins, but I discovered the amazingness that is Bible journaling on this level as well as CBJ in October of 2016. The ability to meditate on God’s word, to imagine an image and then to translate that through art in my Bible has transformed my time of worship, truly.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

CBJ Experience: I love CBJ! I found it by doing research on Bible journaling after attending a Bible journaling event at Family Christian Bookstore. Since 2016 I’ve been an active member and I’ve learned tons about techniques and all the ways that Bible journaling can be communicated from tip-ins to descriptive writing. ❤️ In 2019, I started creating the “Book Showcase Videos” for the Cover to Cover format.

 🔹  🔷   🔹

Techniques: I primarily use lettering, watercolor illustrations, pen & ink, and colored pencils to communicate what I’ve learned from the scriptures.
